Motorway Miles And The Long-Interval Promise

Sandbach sits on top of Junction 17, and that one fact shapes most of the servicing we do here. A car that joins the M6 at Elworth every morning can cover a year’s worth of distance by midsummer, and the variable service indicator is doing its best to guess how hard those miles have been. It counts distance, temperature and engine load, but it has no way of knowing whether the last ten thousand miles were steady running or crawling through roadworks.

We have nothing against long intervals. We are against treating one as a guarantee. Oil is a consumable with a finite additive package, and once the detergents and anti-wear additives are spent it still looks like oil on the dipstick while protecting the engine far less well. On a car doing long motorway days we will usually suggest splitting the interval with an oil and filter change and keeping the full service on its published schedule.

Oil Condition Is Not The Same As Oil Age

Two cars with identical mileage can have oil in completely different states. Shear thins it, heat oxidises it, and on a diesel doing the short hop from the junction into town the particulate filter regenerations that never complete push unburnt fuel past the bores and into the sump. Fuel dilution of that kind thins the oil film exactly where the bearings need it to hold.

So at a service we pay attention to what comes out, not only to the figure on the service plan. Colour, smell, how it runs off the drain plug, what the old filter has caught and whether there is any glitter in the media. That is free information about the inside of an engine and it costs nothing but a couple of minutes to read it.

Turbochargers Live On Clean Oil

The turbo on a motorway car works harder than almost anything else under the bonnet, and its bearings are fed and cooled by the same oil the engine runs on. When that oil is past its best it bakes hard carbon into the feed pipe and the drain, flow drops away, and the first thing most drivers notice is a whistle or a wisp of smoke that was not there the month before.

Keeping the oil to specification and on interval is most of the protection a turbo will ever get. The rest is mechanical: a breather that is not blocked, an air filter that seals properly, and intake pipework and an intercooler without oil pooling in them. Those get looked at on a full service here rather than only the items with a tick box next to them.

Sandbach Servicing FAQs

Questions We Get Asked

The service light has not come on yet but it has been well over a year. What now?

Book it anyway. Variable intervals are capped by time as well as distance, and the time limit is there because oil degrades on the calendar through condensation and oxidation even when the mileage is modest. If the car has sat more than it has driven, an oil and filter change with the main checks is the sensible visit.

Why does the oil on my dipstick smell of diesel?

Because some has got past the bores, which usually means particulate filter regenerations are being interrupted before they finish. Short trips from the motorway junction into town are the classic cause. The oil needs changing sooner than the schedule says, and the reason the regenerations keep failing needs finding, which we can read from the live data at the same visit.

Does a turbo need anything other than clean oil to last?

Clean oil is the big one, but not the only one. The feed and drain pipes need to be clear, the breather system must not be pressurising the sump, and the air filter has to seal so nothing abrasive reaches the compressor wheel. Letting the engine idle for a few seconds after a hard run also helps, because it keeps oil moving while the turbo is still hot.

I use the motorway every day. Does that mean fewer services or more?

More in absolute terms, even though each mile is gentler than a town mile. You simply get through the mileage faster, so oil changes come round more often in the year. The upside is that a car used like this tends to have healthier exhaust and filter systems than one doing four miles a day.

Will a service done at my address still be recorded properly for a company car?

Yes. We note the date, the mileage, the service level, the oil specification used and every part replaced, and you get that in writing to put with the vehicle’s paperwork or pass to whoever manages the fleet. If your scheme has a particular form or portal to fill in, send us the details when you book.

Does the oil filter get changed every time the oil does?

Always. Draining the oil and leaving a loaded filter in place puts dirty oil straight back into circulation and wastes most of the benefit of the change. The filter is a small part of the cost of the job and there is no good argument for reusing one.
