Mobile Car Servicing & Repairs Northwich

Booked servicing at your own address across Northwich, Hartford, Davenham, Rudheath, Barnton and Weaverham. Oil and filters and the usual checks, yes — but also a proper look underneath, because salt does more damage to cars here than mileage does. Work that needs the vehicle lifted on a ramp is quoted and booked in with us.

Servicing In A Town Built On Salt

Northwich has lived with salt for a very long time and the vehicles here show it. The A556, the A559 and the A533 get gritted hard and early because they carry traffic that cannot wait for the weather, and the brine thrown off a wet carriageway finds every seam, stone chip and bare steel fitting beneath a car. Corrosion is not a cosmetic matter on a vehicle used around here; it is the thing most likely to fail it.

Which is why the inspection underneath is not an afterthought on a service in CW8 and CW9 — it is a large part of why the service is worth paying for. With the wheels off and decent light we work along the sills, over the rear axle, around the subframe mountings and at every point where a steel line is clipped to the body, because those are the places salt sits and keeps working.

Brake Pipes, Unions And Flexible Hoses

A steel brake pipe does not fail gradually in any way you could feel through the pedal. It corrodes under its own coating, usually where a clip holds it to the sill or where it meets a flexible hose, then it lets go under pressure on the one occasion you brake hard. We are looking for the stages before that: coating lifting, a union starting to bloom, a pipe deformed where a clip has trapped moisture against it.

Flexible hoses fail their own way, swelling internally so a caliper holds pressure and a wheel drags. Handbrake cables stiffen inside their outers for much the same reason. All three are modest jobs caught early and awkward, costly ones caught late, and which of those you get depends entirely on whether anybody has looked.

Seized Fasteners Turn Short Jobs Long

There is a practical consequence of all this worth saying out loud: nuts and bolts on a salted car fight back. Caliper carrier bolts, spring clamps, exhaust fixings and bleed nipples round off or shear rather than undo, and anyone quoting brake work here on book time has not spent much of it under cars from this part of Cheshire.

We plan for it instead. Penetrating fluid applied first, heat where it is safe to use, new fixings carried rather than old ones reused, and copper grease on hub faces and the backs of pads so the next person has a fighting chance. Where a seized component means a job can no longer be done safely on a driveway, we say so and book it in with us.

Northwich Servicing FAQs

Questions We Get Asked

Can a corroded brake pipe be replaced at my address or does it need lifting?

It depends where on the car the pipe runs. A short section at a caliper or a rear flexible hose is often perfectly doable on a drive with the wheel off and the car safely supported. A full run along the sill or over the axle needs the vehicle properly up in the air, so that gets quoted and booked in with us rather than attempted badly.

How bad does surface rust on a brake line have to be before it matters?

Light surface bloom on the outside of a pipe is common here and not in itself a problem. What matters is whether the corrosion has got under the coating and started eating into the wall, which shows as flaking, pitting or a pipe that has lost its round section. We judge it by what the surface looks like once it has been cleaned back, not by how dirty it is.

My handbrake has got stiff over the winter. Can that be sorted at a service?

Often yes. A cable that has seized in its outer, a dry caliper lever or a rusted drum mechanism are all common after a salty winter, and freeing, lubricating and adjusting usually restores it. If the cable has corroded internally it will need replacing, and we will tell you which of the two you are dealing with before any work is agreed.

Is it worth having the underside of the car washed off after a salty winter?

It genuinely helps, especially if you use a jet wash to get into the wheel arch liners, around the rear axle and along the sill seams where salt collects. Do it on a mild day so the car dries, and avoid blasting directly at electrical connectors or wheel bearing seals. It will not undo existing corrosion but it slows down what has not started yet.

Why do my alloy wheels seize onto the hubs?

Because aluminium against a steel hub in salty water corrodes at the join and effectively welds the two together. It is why a roadside wheel change can turn into a hopeless kicking match. We clean the hub face and apply a thin smear of grease to the mating surface, not the studs, whenever wheels come off at a service.

Do you check the exhaust and heat shields on a service?

Yes, and in this area they are worth a close look. Back boxes and mid-sections rot from the inside out on cars doing short trips, and the thin heat shields above them break up and rattle long before the exhaust itself fails. We check joints, mountings and shields and tell you how much life is realistically left.
