Mobile Car Servicing & Repairs Ashbourne
Planned servicing brought to the yard, the drive or the field gate — Clifton, Mayfield, Kniveton, Bradley, Offcote or further out towards Hulland Ward and Fenny Bentley. Engine oil and filters, axle and gearbox oils, brakes assessed under towing load, bearings, gaiters and pre-MOT checks, on a date you pick. Jobs that need proper lifting equipment are priced up and booked in with us.
Servicing Vehicles That Tow For A Living
A fair proportion of what is parked around Ashbourne is working transport rather than transport to work. Pickups pulling stock and plant trailers, 4x4s with a horsebox heading out past Mayfield, estates loaded to the roof with feed, dogs and fencing, and a steady stream of all three going up the A515 towards the Peak or climbing out of town on the Buxton road. Towing a braked trailer close to its limit roughly doubles what the engine, gearbox, axles and brakes are being asked to do.
Most handbooks have a second column that nobody reads — severe duty, arduous conditions, or heavy use, depending on the maker — and it shortens the intervals for oil, filters and axle fluids when the vehicle tows, works on unmade surfaces or spends time in low gear. If your pickup does three of those things in a week, that column is the one that applies to you. We work from it where the manufacturer publishes one and give a reasoned shorter interval where they do not.
Axle, Transfer Box And Gearbox Oils
These are the oils that get forgotten, partly because nobody sees them and partly because the word people remember is sealed. On a part-time four-wheel-drive the transfer box and front differential do very little until the day they do everything, and oil that has sat for years is not what you want in them. A rear differential dragging a loaded trailer up a gradient runs genuinely hot and shears its oil, limited-slip units want the correct friction modifier, and a great many so-called lifetime gearboxes have a fluid change published in the workshop literature even when the handbook is silent.
We drain and refill to the specification for your axle rather than filling everything with the same bottle, check the magnetic drain plug for the difference between normal fine paste and actual chips of metal, and inspect the axle and gearbox breathers. That last one matters here more than most places: a hot axle driven into a flooded lane or a ford will draw water in through its breather as it cools, and a blocked or badly routed breather is how you end up with an axle full of emulsion and a bearing failure six months later.
Brakes Under Load, Bearings And Track Grit
Brakes that behave perfectly unladen are a different proposition with two tonnes behind them on a long descent. Pad compound, disc thickness and fluid condition all decide whether you get fade halfway down, and an overrun coupling on the trailer that has stiffened up quietly transfers all of that work to the towing vehicle. We measure pads and discs, check fluid boiling point rather than guessing, and look at how evenly the braking is shared.
Lane and track use adds its own list. Grit finds its way into hub seals and wheel bearings, driveshaft and steering rack gaiters split on rutted ground and then pack themselves with mud, spring seats and subframe pockets hold wet soil against bare metal, and towbar mounting bolts work loose over enough rough ground. All of that is checked on a booked visit, because every item on that list is cheap to catch and expensive to ignore.
Scheduled Work For Working Vehicles
Booked servicing and repairs carried out at the address, yard or farm where the vehicle lives, anywhere across the DE6 area.
Towing-Duty Servicing
Oil, filters and checks worked to the heavy-use column of your maker’s schedule rather than the figure written for a car that never pulls anything.
Axle & Gearbox Oils
Differential, transfer box and gearbox fluids drained and refilled to specification, with drain plugs and breathers inspected while the covers are off.
Brakes For Loaded Descents
Pad and disc measurements, fluid condition and braking balance assessed for a vehicle that spends part of its life with a trailer on the back.
Bearings, Gaiters & Towbars
Hub play, driveshaft and steering gaiters, and towbar mounting security all checked, with mud-packed areas cleaned back so what is underneath can be seen.
Filters For Dusty Work
Air, fuel and cabin filters renewed on a shorter cycle for vehicles working unmade tracks, where a blocked element costs power and economy.
Pre-MOT For Pickups
The testable items gone through ahead of the date, with corroded pipes, worn gaiters and brake imbalance flagged while there is still time to act.
4×4, Towing And Service Jobs

Servicing Around Ashbourne And The Dales
The lanes between Ashbourne, the Dove valley and the edge of the Peak are familiar ground, and a yard or a field gate is as workable an address as a driveway. The names below are the ones we count as local when a booked visit is being arranged.
Questions We Get Asked
I tow most weeks. Does that change what my vehicle is due?
It usually does. Towing raises oil and transmission temperatures, loads the axles and brakes far harder and keeps the engine working in a lower gear for longer, and most manufacturers publish shorter intervals for exactly that use. Tell us what you pull and how often, and we will set the schedule against the heavy-use figures rather than the standard ones.
Do differential and gearbox oils genuinely need changing, or are they filled for life?
Sealed for life tends to mean the life the maker had in mind, not the life of the vehicle, and for a towing or off-road vehicle it is worth treating as a service item. Gear oil shears and loses its film strength under sustained load, and the additive package that protects a limited-slip or hypoid gear set depletes. We will tell you what your axles and box actually specify and what condition the old oil comes out in.
My brakes faded coming down a long hill with a loaded trailer. Is that to be expected?
Some loss of bite on a long loaded descent is normal physics, but genuine fade usually means something is wrong. Worn pads, thin discs, old fluid with a depressed boiling point or a trailer whose own brakes are not pulling their share all turn a hard descent into a worrying one. We check all four of those, and the trailer coupling too, so the cause is identified rather than guessed at.
The 4×4 has been through flooded lanes. What should be checked afterwards?
Axle and gearbox oils for water contamination, the breathers that let the water in, wheel bearings and hub seals, and the air intake path in case any water was drawn towards the engine. Emulsified oil on a dipstick or a drain plug is the clearest sign. If it has happened recently it is worth looking sooner rather than at the next scheduled visit, because water in an axle ruins bearings quietly.
Is servicing a four-wheel-drive different from servicing a two-wheel-drive?
There is more to it, yes. Alongside the usual engine oil, filters and brakes there are front and rear differentials, often a transfer box, extra driveshafts and gaiters, and in many cases a shorter interval because of how the vehicle is used. It takes longer and there are more fluids involved, and we will set out exactly which of those items your vehicle needs before the visit.
My gearbox is stiff going into second when it is cold. Is that an oil problem?
It often is, particularly on a box running old or incorrect-grade oil, where the synchromesh gets no help until everything warms through. It can also be worn synchro rings, a stretched linkage or a tired clutch hydraulic that is not fully releasing. A gear oil change to the right specification is the cheap thing to try first, and we will tell you honestly whether we think it will be enough.
