Why Cameras Earn Their Keep In The Potteries

Stoke carries more working vans per mile of road than anywhere else we cover, and that changes the kind of incident people ring us about. It is rarely a dramatic motorway shunt. It is a merge gone wrong where the A500 drops traffic onto the A50, a lane dispute on the Queensway, somebody reversing out of a terraced street in Fenton without looking, or a car door opened into the side of a van on a narrow Burslem road. Low speeds, two versions of events, no independent witness and a bill that lands on whoever cannot prove otherwise.

Dense urban driving also makes the footage harder to read than people expect. Junctions here are busy in three directions at once, so a camera that only catches the last half-second of a closing gap settles nothing. What actually resolves an argument is continuous recording with enough run-up to show the indicator, the lane position and the speed before anything touched, plus a wide enough field of view to pick up a vehicle coming from the nearside. That is a siting and framing decision made on the vehicle, not something you get right by reading the box.

Fleet and multi-camera work

Most of our camera work around the city is on commercial vehicles, and fleets have a different problem from private owners: consistency. If three vans are wired one way and two another, nobody can find the card, nobody knows which menu saves a clip, and the one driver who needed it is the one with the odd install. We fit to a single agreed spec across a fleet — same mounting position, same fuse feed, same cutoff threshold, same card size — so a manager can brief a new driver in a sentence. Forward and rear as standard, with a nearside channel on anything that spends its day pulling out of tight industrial estates and a load-area camera where stock goes missing.

Routing is the slow part on a van and it matters most there. Panel vans and crew cabs have bulkheads, ply lining and door-pillar looms to work around, and a cable that is simply tucked under a floor mat will be cut by a toolbox inside a month. Cables go behind trim, through existing grommets with the rubber reused, and are left with enough slack that a door can shut on nothing. We keep the install out of the way of the airbag curtain and off the safety circuits entirely, which matters on any vehicle but matters more on one worth its weight in tools.

The six towns are one of our busiest areas for commercial vehicle work, so we are in the ST postcodes regularly. Single cars and multi-van fleets are booked the same way.

Ask About A Fleet Fit

Stoke-on-Trent Camera FAQs

Questions We Get Asked

We run several vans from one yard. Can they all be fitted the same?

That is exactly how we prefer to do fleet work. We agree one spec — camera position, fuse feed, cutoff voltage, card size and menu settings — and repeat it on every vehicle. Vans can be done a few at a time around your working day rather than all being off the road together.

Someone brake-tested me on the A500. Would a camera have settled it?

It usually does, because the argument in those cases is about the seconds before the contact rather than the contact itself. Continuous footage showing the gap, the lane and who moved first is far harder to dispute than two statements. It is also why we set the resolution and frame rate for usable detail rather than for the biggest number on the spec sheet.

Will a load-area camera show who has been in the back of the van?

It will if it is sited and lit sensibly. A load-area channel high in a corner with a wide lens covers the doors and most of the floor, and with parking mode active it will record motion while the van is shut. In a dark bulkheaded van we would talk to you about a small interior lamp as well, because a camera cannot record what it cannot see.

Where would you hide a tracker on a van that is full of tools?

Not anywhere a thief can reach in thirty seconds, and not where the racking will be unbolted on a Tuesday. The siting depends on the van, which is partly the point — if the location were predictable it would not be worth fitting. We look for somewhere with a view of the sky, away from heat, and reachable for a future battery change without stripping the vehicle.

Is an interior camera worth it for private hire or taxi work?

Many drivers find it the most useful channel they have, because disputes about behaviour and damage inside the vehicle are harder to resolve than anything that happens outside it. Bear in mind you take on data protection duties once you are recording passengers, including signage in the cab, so it is worth reading up before committing.

How do I get a clip off the camera and send it to my insurer?

Either lock the file on the camera and pull the card, or use the unit’s wifi to copy it to your phone, which is quicker and what we normally set up before leaving. Copy the original file rather than a screen recording of it, because the embedded time, date and speed data is part of what makes the clip worth having.
