Mobile Auto Electrician Derby

Mobile auto electrician covering Derby and the suburbs around it — Mickleover, Littleover, Allestree, Chaddesden, Spondon and Alvaston. Newer cars fail electrically in a different way to older ones: module faults, network problems, batteries that were never coded in, and accessories taken off the wrong feed. We diagnose on the drive or in a car park at work, with the kit to talk to the vehicle properly.

Modern Vehicle Electronics In A Commuter City

Derby’s driving is ring road driving. The A38 and the A52 carry most of it, the inner ring takes the rest, and a large share of the vehicles doing it are fairly new — company cars, lease vehicles, fleet hatchbacks and vans working out of Pride Park, Sinfin and the trading estates off the A6. That changes the sort of electrical work we get called to. Rather less bare wire, and a great deal more module, sensor and software.

On a car built in the last decade almost nothing is a simple circuit. A door mirror, a parking brake or a tailgate is a node on a network, talking constantly to everything else, and a single poor connection can throw up a screenful of unrelated warning lights across systems that have nothing to do with one another. That is why a cheap code reader so often misleads on these vehicles: it reads one controller, lists a long set of consequences, and says nothing at all about the cause. The real fault is usually a single voltage drop or one open circuit sitting upstream of the whole lot.

Batteries that have to be told they are new

The commonest avoidable job we see in DE1 to DE24 is a battery changed without being registered to the vehicle. On most modern cars the charging strategy is built around how old the system believes the battery to be, so a brand new one running on a five-year-old profile gets charged as though it were worn out. The consequences arrive a few months later: stop-start that will not engage, a flat on the first cold morning, sometimes a charging fault logged against a perfectly healthy alternator. Registering it takes a couple of minutes with the right tool, and we do it as part of the job.

Fleet and company-car work brings its own constraint, which is that the vehicle is needed. We can work in a car park or on a driveway in Mickleover, Allestree or Chaddesden while you are at your desk, and where a job genuinely needs the vehicle standing still for longer it can be booked in with us rather than disappearing to a dealer for a week.

Dashcams, trackers and where the power comes from

Hardwiring a camera or a tracker into a modern car is the small job most often done badly. Taken off the wrong feed it either loses power the moment the ignition goes off, so parking mode never records anything, or it stays live and keeps pulling current while the car is asleep. Done properly it comes from a fuse that was designed to be tapped, through a voltage-sensing cut-off set so the device switches itself off before the battery drops too far, with the loom tucked behind trim and nothing routed across an airbag path. On a vehicle with a battery monitoring sensor it also has to be taken from the correct side of that sensor, or the car begins miscalculating its own state of charge and charges accordingly.

Derby Auto Electrics FAQs

Questions We Get Asked

Does a new battery really need coding to the car?

On most vehicles built in the last ten years or so, yes. The charging system keeps a record of the battery’s age and condition and adjusts how hard it charges accordingly, so if nobody resets it the new battery gets treated like the worn one it replaced. The usual outcome is poor charging, stop-start that gives up, and a second battery failure far sooner than it should have come.

Why do several unrelated warning lights come on at the same time?

Because the systems all sit on the same network and share power and earth paths. One bad earth, or one module that has dropped off the bus, makes every other controller report that it cannot talk to it, which fills the dashboard with symptoms and buries the cause. The job is to find the single point upstream of the whole list rather than chase each code separately.

Is a cheap plug-in code reader enough for a modern car?

It is useful for reading engine codes and not a great deal else. It will not see most of the other modules, cannot look at live data from them, and will not tell you whether a code is a cause or a consequence. On a networked vehicle you need a tool that talks to every controller, plus a meter, and that is what we turn up with.

Can a dashcam be hardwired without any risk of flattening the battery?

Yes, provided it goes through a voltage-sensing cut-off rather than straight onto a permanent live. The cut-off switches the camera off once the battery falls to a set level, so parking mode records while there is charge to spare and then stops. On cars with a battery monitoring sensor the feed also has to come from the correct side of it.

I have a fault that only appears when it is raining. Can that be traced?

Usually, though it takes some patience. Water-related faults are almost always a specific connector, a blocked drain or a failed seal, and they repeat in the same conditions, which is actually helpful. We will often recreate it with water rather than wait on the weather, then confirm the circuit with a meter before anything gets dismantled.

Can you work on the car while it is parked at my office?

Yes, as long as we can get to the vehicle and work safely around it. Most diagnostic and accessory work happens in a parking space without the car needing to move, so you do not lose a day over it. If it turns out to need the vehicle off the road for longer, it can be booked in with us.
