Coming down off the moors means long spells with the pads doing real work, and the wear that results is rarely even. We measure both sides, look for a pad that has tapered because a slider has stiffened, and check disc thickness and the lip at the outer edge instead of judging by eye through the wheel. Fluid gets tested as well, because water in old brake fluid boils at exactly the moment you need the pedal most.
Tyres tell a similar story. Cornering on cambered moorland bends scrubs the outer shoulders long before the centre wears, and an alignment fault that would stay hidden on a motorway car shows itself here within a few thousand miles. We read tread across the full width, inside edges included, and set pressures to the figures on the vehicle’s own plate.
Automatic Gearbox Fluid Is Not Sealed For Life
A torque converter working its way up through Rainow and back down into Bollington makes heat, and heat is what finishes transmission fluid. A good many boxes are described as filled for life, which in practice means the life the manufacturer had in mind rather than the two hundred thousand miles the car may go on to do. Where the maker publishes a change interval, or the fluid comes out dark and smelling burnt, we will tell you.
On a healthy box a fluid and filter change is ordinary maintenance and well worth having. On a box already slurring between ratios it is a gamble, and we would sooner be straight about that than take the money and hand back the same complaint. Either way the job is quoted before anything is drained.

Questions We Get Asked
My brakes squeal after a run over the moors but are quiet in town. Is that a fault?
Often it is glazing rather than a fault. Sustained braking on a descent heats the pad surface until it hardens and polishes, and a hard-glazed pad squeals against a smooth disc until the surfaces bed in again. We check pad material and disc condition at the service, and if the pads have been cooked beyond recovery we will tell you rather than leave you listening to it.
Why are my front tyres wearing on the outer edges?
Usually a mix of alignment and the way the roads here are shaped. Cambered bends and repeated cornering load the outer shoulder, and a small amount of excess toe-out or worn front bushes turns that into visible wear within a few thousand miles. We measure the tread across the width and point you at an alignment check when the pattern says the geometry is out.
Does my automatic gearbox oil ever need changing if it is described as filled for life?
Most of them benefit from it, and plenty of makers publish an interval even on boxes that get called sealed. The fluid is a hydraulic medium as well as a lubricant, and once it has broken down the clutch packs and valve body suffer. We will look up what your box actually calls for and give you a straight answer on whether a change is a good idea at its current mileage.
The car smells hot after coming down into town from the moors. Should I be worried?
It is worth having looked at rather than ignored. Hot brakes have their own smell and will usually fade once the car has cooled, but the same smell can come from a slipping clutch, a coolant leak dripping onto hot metal or oil seeping onto the exhaust. We can check the obvious sources at a booked visit and tell you which of those it is.
I do short school runs in the week and long drives at weekends. Which service does the car need?
That mix puts you in the heavier of the two categories most handbooks describe, so the shorter interval is the one to follow. Short cold trips contaminate the oil and the longer runs then ask that oil to work hard at temperature. We would normally suggest an annual full service with an interim change in between, with the particulate filter and exhaust condition looked at if the car is a diesel.
How do you check a dual-mass flywheel without taking the gearbox off?
By listening and by feel, which gets you most of the way. A failing dual-mass gives a rattle at idle that changes when the clutch is dipped, vibration through the floor as the engine is shut down, and often a judder from rest. None of that is proof on its own, so we tell you what the symptoms point to, what the parts and labour would come to, and let you decide before the box comes off.
