What A Call-Out Actually Looks Like

This is a mobile operation: a van loaded with tools, test equipment and the parts most roadside jobs turn out to need, covering Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, with emergency call-outs when available. That last phrase is meant literally and it is worth saying out loud. If the van is already committed to a job in Sandbach it cannot be on the A515 half an hour later, and pretending otherwise would leave somebody standing at the edge of a road in the dark believing help was on its way.

So the first thing you get is a straight answer. Tell us where the vehicle is and what it is doing, and we will say whether we can get to you and roughly when, or tell you we cannot — in which case you have spent two minutes rather than two hours and can ring a recovery firm or your cover provider instead. One important exception: if you are in a live lane, on a hard shoulder, or anywhere on a smart motorway stretch with no refuge, get yourself behind the barrier and call 999 first. No mechanic should be your first call in that situation.

Jump starts, batteries and the reason behind them

A jump start is a way of moving a vehicle, not an explanation of why it stopped. Once it is running we would far rather spend ten more minutes finding the cause: load-testing the battery instead of reading its resting voltage, checking what the alternator is genuinely putting out at the terminals with the headlights and blower switched on, and measuring voltage drop across the main earth straps, which is where salt-belt vehicles around Northwich and Middlewich quietly lose their starting current every winter.

If the battery really is the fault we carry common sizes, and where the vehicle requires it the new one is registered so the charging strategy matches it rather than cooking it. If the battery is not the fault, you have saved the cost of one. A good proportion of non-starts are something else entirely — an immobiliser that is not seeing the key, a tired starter or a sticking solenoid, a crank sensor, a fuel pump relay, a chewed earth strap under a wheel arch — and those are found with a meter and a scan tool rather than by fitting parts hopefully and hoping.

Fixed At The Kerb, Or Honestly Booked In

A fair amount can be finished where the vehicle stands. Batteries, terminals and earths, fuses and relays, bulbs and lighting faults, a wheel change, water sitting in a connector, a split hose or a failed clip, leads and coils, sensors, and a limp-mode diagnosis where the codes are read and interpreted properly instead of simply cleared so the light goes out for a fortnight. Plenty of electrical faults only ever show themselves away from a garage, which is exactly where we are. Getting a vehicle running and back to your own drive beats a lorry and a long wait every time.

The rest is where honesty earns its keep. A clutch, a cambelt, a head gasket, corroded brake pipes or anything that needs the vehicle properly supported is not a job for a verge on the A500, and beginning it there helps nobody. When that is the position we say so plainly, tell you what we think it is and what it is likely to involve, and it can then be booked in with us or recovered to wherever you would prefer. Being told straight that tonight is a recovery job is worth considerably more than an optimistic hour spent on a kerb in the rain.

Roadside Work

What We Do When A Vehicle Stops

Whatever the vehicle is doing, call and describe it — the triage over the phone is free and often tells us most of what we need.

Jump Starts & Batteries

Getting a vehicle running, then load-testing and checking the charging system so you know whether it was the battery or something that will strand you again.

Roadside Fault Finding

Scan tool, meter and wiring diagrams brought to wherever the vehicle has stopped, so a non-start or a warning light is diagnosed rather than guessed at.

On-The-Spot Repairs

Sensors, relays, leads and coils, hoses, terminals and earths put right at the kerb where the job can be completed safely and properly in one visit.

Call-Outs When Available

One mobile van working Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm. Ring and you will be told whether we can reach you and when, or told honestly that we cannot.

Lighting Failures Away From Home

Headlamps, rear lamps and trailer lighting failures sorted at the roadside, including the corroded earths and bad connections that usually cause them.

Towing & Trailer Trouble

Trailer sockets, bypass modules and dead trailer boards checked where you are, so a horsebox or caravan is not left blocking a lane with no lights.

Roadside Assistance FAQs

Questions We Get Asked

How soon can you get to me if my vehicle has stopped?

It depends entirely on where the van already is and what it is in the middle of. Ring and describe where you are, and you will get an honest answer — either a realistic time, or a clear no so you can call someone else straight away. We would rather lose the job than have you waiting on a promise we cannot keep.

Will a jump start be enough to get me home?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. If the battery was simply flat and the charging system is healthy, a decent run will put enough back in to see you home and start again the next morning. If the alternator is not charging you are running on borrowed time and the engine will stop again wherever it happens to be, so we test before telling you it is safe to set off.

Do you carry batteries on the van or does one have to be ordered in?

Common sizes are carried, which covers most cars and vans we are called to. Less usual fitments, large commercial batteries and some stop-start AGM and EFB types may need collecting, in which case we will say so at the time rather than fitting something that is not right for the vehicle. Where the battery needs registering to the car we do that as part of the job.

I have broken down on a motorway slip road. What should I do first?

Get the vehicle as far left as you can, put the hazards on, leave the vehicle by the nearside doors if it is safe to do so and wait behind the barrier rather than inside it. Then call 999 or the number on the nearest marker post so the road can be protected. A mechanic cannot work safely on a live slip road, so recovery to a safe location comes first and we can look at the vehicle after that.

What sort of faults can genuinely be sorted at the roadside?

Anything that does not need the vehicle lifted or supported, and that can be finished safely where it stands: starting and charging problems, electrical faults, lighting, fuses and relays, sensors, ignition components, hoses and clips, wheel changes and limp-mode diagnosis. The limit is set by safety and by whether the repair can be completed to a standard that will last, not by how awkward it looks.

Is it worth calling you if I already have breakdown cover?

It can be, and it can also be worth using both. Recovery cover is very good at moving a vehicle but will not always diagnose and repair it where it sits, so some people get recovered home and then have us attend there. If your cover will get to you sooner than we can, we will say so — that is a better outcome for you than waiting on us out of loyalty.

Vehicle Stopped Somewhere Awkward?

Ring or send a WhatsApp with your location and what happened, and you will get a straight answer on whether we can attend.
